Program Description

The National Congress of American Indians (2021) reported a substantial projected growth in the American Indian/Alaska Native population, representing 9.7 million (in combination with another race), and reflective of an 86.5 percent growth in the 2020 US Census (National Congress of American Indians, 2020). The United States recognizes 574 federally recognized tribes; tribal lands span approximately 3.797 million square miles. The tribes are heterogenous, with each tribe having its own unique customs and traditions; however, there is overlap in shared values and beliefs. Discussion of heterogeneity will be reviewed related to clinical practice. Further we will review the tribal values and beliefs, which are based in traditional knowledge systems that have spanned thousands of years (Gone, 2021). Providing psychological services in Indian Country is both rewarding and challenging. We will discuss the improvements to service delivery in Indian Country which have occurred and the gaps which continue to exist in psychological service provision to tribal citizens. These, in part, may be attributed to a difference in worldview perspectives (Ross, et al, 2021; Goodkind, 2015) and as part of our ethics we need to ensure this is applied in our clinical settings and decision making. Further, participants will review legal, ethical, and professional considerations to care delivery in remote, rural, and urban Indian Country.
