The 2011 convention, Together Through Challenge and Change, download brochure here, is highlighted by a variety of nationally and internationally recognized speakers. This title reflects a fusion of the themes that the convention committee felt characterize many of the current issues we face as a profession in Arizona, and the emerging world of psychology as we forge ahead into the 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our Friday keynote address will be David Ballard, Psy.D., MBA, who is the Assistant Executive Director for Marketing and Business Development for the American Psychological Association. Dr. Ballard will talk about some of the exciting innovations in psychology that will change how we practice, market ourselves, and even think about the work we do. Changes related to technology will be a focus of several presentations throughout the convention. In addition to his keynote, Dr. Ballard will provide sessions focusing on the influence of technology in practice and Fred Wechsler, Ph.D., Psy.D. will address the emerging practice of tele-health. Technology also represents an intersection of change with challenge. Presentations by Lynne Kenney, Psy.D. and Mark Rhode, Ph.D. will address potential issues in the use of technology by children and adolescents, including parenting strategies and “sexting,” while Marcus Earle, Ph.D. will address the increasingly frequent issues of Internet pornography addiction.
Also highlighted are presentations addressing some of the most difficult issues faced in our state during the last year. Joel Dvoskin, Ph.D. will discuss the tragic shooting in Tucson earlier in the year, and psychology’s critical role in responding to such violent incidents. Additionally, we will have a panel discussion focusing on the challenges of working with children of undocumented immigrants, addressing strategies to increase effectiveness when the work of psychology intersects with one of the most controversial social issues of our day. Besides these topics other presentations highlight emerging challenges for our profession in Arizona and nationally, such as work with the increasing number of Veterans seeking mental health services, and issues of head trauma and concussions that are receiving such frequent attention in sports psychology.
While many of our sessions focus on complex and difficult topics, our hope in doing so is to emphasize the critical role of psychology, and the importance of professional unity in addressing these issues . We hope we also provide some inspiration and re-affirmation of what brought us all into the profession, highlighted by Saturday’s keynote presentation by Andy Hogg, Ph.D. on “Why I became a psychologist.”
In creating our program, our committee worked very hard to invite sessions that will be interesting and useful to the wide range of professional settings that our profession serves. Whether your work is in a clinical, consultative, school, or research setting, or whomever you work with, we think there will be programming that is worthwhile for you. And of course we will be opportunity to learn about the important ongoing work of AzPA throughout the state, to honor some of our most prominent professional leaders, and to re-connect with colleagues. We hope to see you there!
