Aaron H. and Matilda B. Canter Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Psychology

There are psychologists who by their example over the entirety of their careers show us the best we can be. Through their leadership and compassionate service, warmly extended in friendship and spanning more than 60 years, Aaron and Matilda (Matty) Canter were the embodiment of the best of our profession. The Aaron H. and Matilda B. Canter award for distinguished contributions to professional psychology honors those who follow in their spirit, and reflects commitment to APA, AzPA and the entire psychological community throughout one’s career.

 

Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Professional Practice of Psychology

Those who apply psychology in professional practice are experts in assessing and diagnosing problems, preventing and alleviating suffering, and expanding health and resilience. The distinguished contribution to the practice of psychology award honors those who have dedicated their efforts to the prevention, assessment, and/or treatment of particular mental health problems, have advanced the field though the development or promotion of a particular clinical strategy, theoretical orientation or modality, or brought psychological practice to particular treatment settings

 

Distinguished Contribution to Advocacy Award

Research and practice in psychology can play a critical role in formulating public policy to address social problems and improve human welfare. The advocacy award honors those who have used psychological expertise to assist their community and society through supporting, engaging with or working through community organizations, educating legislators, governmental agencies, judicial bodies, or the public, broadening and strengthening coalitions among community bodies, or participating in litigation to improve human welfare.

 

Distinguished Contribution to the Science of Psychology Award

AzPA recognizes the fundamental scientific basis of psychology and as such, our professional contribution to understanding humanity.  The distinguished contribution to the science of psychology award honors those academic or practicing psychologists who have advanced new or expanded existing theory, conducted outstanding quantitative and/or qualitative basic research, or have advanced new and/or pivotal ways to apply basic research with exceptional clarity and creativity to expand psychological knowledge.

 

Distinguished Mentor

Mentors play a unique and critical role in supporting the development of future generations in our profession. The distinguished mentor award honors those who readily and easily share what they know with students, early career psychologists, and established colleagues. Through their work, they help others formally or informally integrate their professional and personal roles, and remind their colleagues of our shared joy of discovery of the human condition and our love of our profession.

 

Distinguished Service to Psychology

Distinguished service as a psychologist is reflected in outstanding leadership and support of the profession and professional community. The distinguished service award honors those who have served AzPA and the psychological community in Arizona by engaging in significant leadership roles, helping the organization and community expand its scope to new activities and services, or defended the profession from efforts to inhibit the practice of psychology.

 

Friend of Psychology Award

Given to a person who has made outstanding contributions in time, expertise and involvement to advance AzPA’s capability to make a difference in the profession

 

AzPA recognizes that there are non-psychologists who appreciate the value of psychological practice, research and knowledge.  The friend of psychology award honors those who make dedicated and outstanding contributions in time and expertise to advance AzPA’s mission and goals and to advance the entire field of psychology in academic and applied endeavors.

 

Legislator of the Year

Given to a legislator who has demonstrated outstanding support to the profession of psychology or psychological issues in the public

 

Psychology is influenced by legislative action in many ways, including work that impacts the functioning of the psychology as a licensed profession, and in the support of public universities in which much psychological research and education takes place.  The Outstanding Legislator award honors legislators who demonstrate a commitment to psychology by introducing or supporting legislation that promotes psychological practice,  opposing legislation harmful to the practice of psychology, and supporting the work of an educational system by which to maintain and grow psychological education and research in the state of Arizona.

 

Outstanding Media Person of the Year Award

Given to professional media people who have brought attention to psychology’s contributions to the mental health community and meeting community needs as well as the need for community based mental health services

 

AzPA recognizes that the general public needs to be informed and educated about the need for and benefits of community based and private practice based mental health services, the nature of mental health problems and their remedies, and the pivotal role psychology and psychologists  play in providing mental and physical health services, and in helping humanity understand itself.  The outstanding media person of the year award honors those how educate and inform the public about psychology through  print, video, radio, or electronic journalism, documentary film, and/or music, theater, film or other artistic means.

 

Outstanding Psychology Faculty

Psychology faculty play a critical role in the continuance our profession. The award for outstanding psychology faculty is selected by the AzPA Graduate Student membership. It recognizes the many and varied roles of a psychology faculty member, and honors those who have inspired students and colleagues, contributed to the advancement of psychological science, and created an atmosphere of incisive curiosity and joyful learning within the academy.
